TPS7A20: output voltage range

Part Number: TPS7A20

I ask this question because there was no data in the datasheet for the conditions we use.

When using TPS7A2009PDBVR,

will the voltage supply be within the rated voltage range of the device to which it is connected (0.855 to 0.945V)

even if various factors (regulation, etc.) are considered

when the input voltage is 3.3V (25mV input variation after steady state) and load current is 250mA?

  • Hi Tsukiji-San,

Yes, when using TPS7A2009PDBVR the supply and load to be used in the system will meet the requirements across Vin, and Iout for Vout = 0.9V. TPS7A2009PDBVR will meet the 0.855 V to 0.945 V spec requirement.

The minimum tolerance is -40 mV and the maximum tolerance is 40 mV as shown in the electrical characteristics table below.

Please note when using a larger load and input supply die temperature will increase, because of the power dissipated in the system.

For example, using Vin = 3.3V, Vout =0.9V, and Iout = 250 mA, power dissipated in the LDO will be 0.6W. According to thermal metrics for the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance specification, the LDO temperature will rise 187.1 °C/W. This means that for a 0.6W power dissipation, the die temperature would increase by 112.26 °C.

If using ambient temperature of 25C, the temperature would rest at 137.26 °C, which is above the recommended operating temperature as shown in table 6.3 below. Though, our absolute maximum rating, 6.1 below, shows that the absolute maximum temperature to operate at is 150 °C, and the typical characteristics graphs show performance of the device up to 150 °C.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

  • Hi Nelson-san

    Thank you for your response.

    I have an additional question.

    1. Is it still within the range of 0.855 to 0.945V even if I take into account other factors than output voltage tolerance, such as load regulation and line regulation?

    2. If the device is used at an ambient temperature of 50°C, would it be NG because the temperature would be 162.26°C, which exceeds the absolute maximum operating temperature?

    Best Regards

  • Hi Nelson-san

    There was a typographical error.

The load current is 25 mA, not 250 mA

So please disregard the second part of the email I just sent you.

  • Hi Tsukiji-san,

    1. Yes, the LDO will still be within the range of 0.855V to 0.945V when accounting for load and line regulation.

Looking at the electrical characteristics table, 6.5, the output will be within +/- 40 mV when:

    1. Line Regulation: Vin=1.2V to 6.0V
    2. Load Regulation: Iout=1mA to 300mA

Line regulation is the change in the output voltage due to the input voltage change, and load regulation is the change in output voltage due to load current change.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Best Regards,
