TPS709-Q1: short-circuit strength

Part Number: TPS709-Q1

Good day colleagues,

My customer is using two voltage regulator TPS70950QDBVRQ1 to power external sensors. See circuit diagram section.

On the customer side, they have to ensure short-circuit protection according to UBatt and GND at the output. Short circuit to GND is ok, but to UBatt is not given. How can we achieve this required short-circuit strength and up to what voltage?

Thank you,

Daria

  • Hi Daria,

Hope you are doing well. Can you please clarify your question? UBATT is the output I am assuming because it is not labeled on the schematic. I am unsure what short circuit you are talking about and where in the data sheet you are getting information about short circuit data.

Maybe we can solve this concern through a different way because there is no mention of short circuit in the data sheet for this part. Maybe you mean reverse current?

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Josh,

in normal case you will find on the output pin  “PSD_Sensor_PWR” 5V when the voltage regulator is switched on and working.

Short Circuit to UBATT means that we connect a voltage from 8 – 16 V (Battery Voltage from Car) to the output pin “PSD_Sensor_PWR”.

Yes we can call it reverse current.

    Thank you,

    Daria

  • Hi Daria,

Thank you for the further clarification.

The abs MAX on this device for Vout is 6.5-V. I wouldn't worry so much about reverse current because we have reverse current protection. I would worry about burning the Vout pin or the internals of the device. You should not exceed the maximum voltage that this device is rated for because it can cause harm to the device instantly.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    Thank you,
    Josh Nachassi
