TPS25200: IEC62368 Single fault conditions

Part Number: TPS25200

Hi,

We are looking at using TPS25200 to limit the input current in order to be compliant to IEC 62368 PS1 (I.e. below 15W) in a 5V device.

What happens in a single-fault condition for the Rilim and other necessary components?

Rilim open/not mounted I presume would limit the current to a low value, but what happens if Rilim is shorted to GND?

Would the current limit continue to increase or would it be clamped at ~2.9A? Would you then have to rely on thermal shutdown to turn off the device in case of a short circuit on the output?

Can you give an estimate of the time before this happens? (IEC 62368 PS1 requires the 15W limit to be enforced within 3 seconds)

Any additional information on the single-fault conditions would be appreciated.

Regards,

   Jan

  • Hi Jan,

    Welcome to E2E

Here are the device behavior for Rilim OPEN and Short conditions.

    • RLIM OPEN : We expect the device to start limiting current to a very low value (theoretically 0).This means the part will not start up
    • RLIM SHORT : There is no in built pin short detect functionality. Device will limit the current to a higher value determined by path parasitics.

    Best Regards,
