TLV766-Q1: Minimum ESR

Part Number: TLV766-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS709, TPS7A20, TPS7A47, TPS7A24

Hi team,

TLV766-Q1 requires 2mΩ ESR as recommended operating condition.

While, the datasheet also states that "The device is designed to be stable using low equivalent series resistance (ESR) ceramic capacitors at the input and output". Some of ceramic capacitors have ESE which is less than 2mΩ depending on frequency.

Is requirement for minimum 2mΩ ESR correct?

I've never seen minimum ESR requirement for LDO which supports ceramic capacitor on output such as TPS7A20, TPS709, TPS7A24, TPS7A47 etc.

Best regards,

Shota Mago

  • Hey Shota,

I agree that it is strange that the device has a minimum ESR requirement.

The DS does say the ROC conditions are required for stability:

Because I was not able to find a note in our characterization and validation data, the minimum ESR is probably correct.

I will message the team members associated with this part and update the thread if they have conflicting opinions.

    Best,

    Juliette

  • Hi Juliette,

Thanks for your reply. I understand that ROC conditions are required for stability. But generally, I think most of  LDOs which support ceramic capacitor only specifies max ESR.

Please let me know if you receive any conflicting options.

  • Hey Shota,

The designers only verified stability for up to 2mOhms, so we can only guarantee based on what design gives us.
