Hello Viola,
I don't think necessary. TPS56837 has good thermal performance. You can use webench thermal simulation.
24Vin-5Vout-8A-500kHz-25C Ta, see below estimated Tj, about 79.54℃.
In our design we have to use this TPS56837 DC - DC Buck convertor. The Input voltage is 12V and the output Voltage is 5V with 8A current. I simulate the circuit in we bench designer, from the results the total power dissipation is 2.994W. And I check the thermal stress for the IC @25 C its getting 152.59% of thermal stress. I need clarification on this issue. Whether heat sink is required or not.
Hello Viola,
It really depends on your application conditions (what's your ambient temperature? If high, maybe need to add heat sink; how many layers of your PCB board, does your board have good thermal dissipation performance?) and your thermal requirement (e.g. IC temp lower than 80C?).
I simulated 12Vin-5Vout-8A-500kHz-25C Ta, webench estimated IC temperature is 75C. May I know how your '52.59% of thermal stress' come from?
Our device max Tj is 150C. It has thermal shutdown protection when Tj beyond 165C.
