TPS65987D: No USB support in SOURCE-Mode

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPD6S300

Hello,

I am using the TPS65987D for a docking station circuit which:

- Can provide Power (20V 65W; Source-Mode) over USB-C to a Tablet or Laptop PC.

- can be powered from the Laptop in passive mode when the docking is not self-powered (5V/1A Sink mode).

- in both modes the docking should provide USB-ports (only USB20) for external devices (Laptop is the Host) like USB- mass-storage, keyboard, mouse.

My custom circuit and the firmware configured with the Application Customization Tool is working so far.

Powering and charging the Tablet/Laptop is working well.

In passive mode (without extern power) the Tablet/Laptop powers the docking and the USB is working well in this mode.

But in Source mode (the docking is powering the Laptop/Tablet) USB is not working.

I tried very much with the settings in the Firmware but nothing is working. Do you have an idea what goes wrong.

The project file is attached.

The USB-port is routed directly from USB-C port over a TPD6S300 to the USB-Hub. The TPS65987D is not connected to the USB-lines.

  • Sorry, team is out of office today 'coz of US holiday - Please allow a delayed response to your post.

  • Hello Markus,

This most likely seems like an issue with connections between the connector and USB-Hub, the reason being the PD controller has nothing to do with the data path. You would have to look through the connections between the connector and USB-HUB and also ensure the hub is behaving the right way.

With respect to the project file:  Register 0x28 - Change Receptacle Type to Standard fully-feature USB-C receptacle (if needed)
Apart from that the project file looks good.

  • Hello Deepak,

    thanks for your fast replay.
In Sink mode the connection between USB C Connector and USB mode is working fine. There USB and power works fine.
But when I switch on the power (without any changing of the plugs) for the docking then the USB will be cut.

This I can observe with a tablet and a laptop.

I have an embedded computer where I adapted with a TPS65987D evalboard a USB-C functionality. With this combination the USB is working in both modes.

For test I changed the USB Hub with an USB connector and plugged in there my USB-Device – same issue. In sink mode the USB is working and in source mode not.

It seems, that the host USB-port changes the USB-mode or functionality by changing from sink to source mode.

A change to “Standard fully-featured USB-C receptacle” changes nothing on this issue.

Now several hour’s I tested every option in the configuration tool. Since I enabled in Source PDO 1 (Transmit Source Capability) “USB Cable” USB is working in both modes.
    Why?
    For what is this option?
    What function has it?

    Regards,
    Markus
