TPS22959: Disconnect the battery while charging using TPS22959 load switch

Part Number: TPS22959
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ21040

Can the TPS22959 load switch be used for Disconnecting the Load While Charging a single lithium ion battery using bq21040.

in another question I was advised to use the CHG/ pin on the bq21040 to drive the logic, will it work with the TPS22959?!

What would be the status of the CHG/ pin when no usb power is connected?!

  • Hi Ahmad,

Yes, TPS22959 can be used for disconnecting the load during charging. I believe using the CHG/ pin will be ok, as it will be pulled to GND (turn TPS22959 OFF) when charging the battery and Hi-Z/pulled high (turning TPS22959 ON) when charging is complete. When USB/BQ input is removed, the CHG/ pin should be Hi-Z, please see below

A couple things I would note:

-make sure of are that the TPS22959 VOUT would not be higher than its VIN

-you may want to use 4xTPS22997 as they have thermal shutdown as added protection. If not, I'd recommend 3xTPS22959 to make sure they can handle your peak current in DC operation.

    Thanks,

    Patrick
