BQ20Z65-R1_BQEVSW-SW: Maintenance charging

Part Number: BQ20Z65-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ20Z65

Hello,

bq20z65 data sheet mentions the MCHG bit in charging status register as Maintenance charging. But could not find more details about Maintenance charging in the data sheet. Can anyone please provide more details on Maintenance charging and give clarity what is Maintenance charging?

What is the meaning if the MCHG bit is being set?

Thomas CN

  • Hey Thomas,

This question has been assigned out and we will get back to you sometime next week.

  • Hi Nick Richards,

Thanks for the reply. Awaiting the clarification at the earliest.

  • MCHG signals the state of the battery after charge termination was detected but if there's still a positive current into the battery
(a maintenance charging current). The gauge will report the Maintenance Current settings for Charging Current when MCHG = 1.

  • Hi Dominik Hartl,

Thanks for the reply. However we are new to this 'maintenance charging' concept and require some more clarity.

It will be great help if you can elaborate a little about what is maintenance charging concept or provide any reference documentation on the same

  • There are several states for charging: Constant Current, Constant Voltage, Maintenance. In sequence.

So once charging stops, you can let the gauge tell the charger to apply a maintenance current, if desired. This isn't mandatory but an option. If you use this option, the gauge will automatically tell the host that the charger should apply the maintenance charge (this current is available through the ChargingCurrent() command).

That's really all there is to it.
