TPS61080EVM-147: TPS61080 Replacement

Part Number: TPS61080EVM-147
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61080, TLV61046A, TPS61046, TPS61378-Q1, TPS61376, TPS61288, TLV61047, TPS61170

Hello,

I have a customer that has been using the TPS61080 but wants to update his design with a different part. Below are the specifications.

VIN - Using a lithium battery 3.6V charged. We run it until it dies, say around 3.2 ~3.3V

VOUT - Needs to be adjustable since we switch output to either 13 V or 18V

IOUT - Powering an external sensor with the above voltages with a current of 60mA. Headroom is always good, so it needs to have at least 100mA

Temp - Standard Industrial temperature range -40C ~ 85C or better

I have tried to use Webench for the TLV61046A and the TPS61046, but they don't meet the current requirement of 100mA. Do you have any recommendations?

Best,

Jason Maxwell

  • Hi Jason,

It confuses me about the spec.

For the input=3.2V output=18V and 100mA, the input average current is calculated to be 18*0.1/0.85/3.2=0.66A

It will be not enough for the device TPS61080 as it has a typical current limit of 0.7A and its minimum value is 0.5A.

    Has the spec been changed?

TPS61046's typical current is 900mA and minimum is 0.6A

If TPS61080 is capable of the application, TPS61046/TLV61046A will be OK then.

When other devices are recommended, here are three categories.

first are those have load disconnect function with integrated synchronous switch,

    like TPS61378-Q1 and TPS61376

second are those without load disconnection but with integrated synchronous switch.

    like TPS61288,

third are those neither load disconnection nor with integrated synchronous switch. These will be cheaper but need external diode.

like TPS61085A, TPS61170 and TLV61047(will be RTMed this year)

Please choose from these and tell us if you have more questions.

    Best Regards,

    Fergus
