TPS1HA08-Q1: Energy dissipation during turn-on

Part Number: TPS1HA08-Q1

Hello,

we want to use TPS1HA08C as Power Switch to supply a number of ECUs.
We do not know, which electronics might be connected to this Power Switch in the future, so we need to define limits for Capacitance / Current Draw.

I could not find any values in the Datasheet on how much Energy the switch can withstand while turning on.
Is there a given value in the datasheet or formula I might have overlooked to calulate this?

Thank you!

  • Hi Fabian,

Are you looking for how much energy the part can take without entering thermal shutdown? The device can charge very large capacitances over multiple current limit -> thermal shutdown cycles. If you want the capacitance the part can discharge in just one cycle, what will your highest Tamb be?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

  • Hi Patrick,

yes, I need to know how much energy the part can take, without entering thermal shutdown.
We are currently testing TPS1HA08C in an ECU, where we had encountered weird behaviour, where one PCB is able to charge a 3mF Load with 2A,DC in parallel in one step. While a second ECU will not be able to charge even 1mF without any Load in parallel.

    Our highest Tamb is 85°C.

    Thank you!

    Fabian

  • Hi Fabian,

Since we don't spec this as it's heavily application-dependent, I'll test this on an EVM in the lab on Monday to find the max capacitance the part can charge at 85C. What voltage will your supply be? And will there be a load in parallel during cap charging?

    Thanks,

    Patrick

  • Hi Patrick,

we are using a 12V Supply with the switch.
There might be a parallel loads later on, depending on the electronics which might be powered from the switch.
I was testing with 3mF and a parallel load of up to 3A.

    Thank you!

    Fabian
