TPS1211-Q1: How do I choose an output diode and validate it?

Part Number: TPS1211-Q1

Tool/software:

Hi team,

In TPS1211-Q1 datasheet, it suggests that users use a diode or a TVS diode across the output and GND to absorb negative spikes.

Is there any advice on how to choose an output diode?

And how can we validate the output diode in the application?

  • Hi Weixu,

This device can take down to -30V on the output, so I recommend choosing a TVS that will clamp just above, but not lower than, this value - something like -28V. For validation, perhaps you can pulse a current-limited signal less than -30V on the output and probe the output to make sure the TVS clamps above -30V, and verify the TPS1211-Q1's proper operation afterwards.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

  • Dear Patrick,

We use a SUPER BARRIER RECTIFIER in our application, which is in parallel with the load.

The output side have many ICs.

Are there any important parameters for choosing alternative diode we need to consider?

  • Hi Weixu,

In general, the TVS should protect your ICs from overvoltage and negative voltage (if your system requires it). I recommend reading the application note here.

    Thanks,

    Patrick
