TPS22811: Voltage Level Decreasing when there is no load connected to the IC

Part Number: TPS22811

Tool/software:

Below is the overall on how the components are connected.

Please ignore the similarity in the net names because they are not part of the same project files. However, they are connected physically via cables.

Refer to the sketch and I will explain by referring to circuit (A) and (B).

Here is how the components are connected:

After conversion from AC-DC, the output of circuit (A) 15V is connected to the relay common pin in circuit (B).

The relay NO pin of the 15V does not connected to any load (technically, it's open).

Here is the sketch of how the 15V goes to relay common pin:

(A) TPS22811:

(B) Here is the relay circuit:

The issue:

J13 in circuit (B) is connected to a rocker switch which is used to power up the 12V relay.

When the rocker switch is off, the reading on the output of TPS22811 in circuit (A) is 14.94V.

When the rocker switch is turned on, the output of TPS22811 in circuit (A) starts to decrease from 14.94V to a value close 0V.

What can be the cause of decreasing voltage when there is no load connected to the TPS22811?

  • Hello David,

    Thank You for reaching out.

    Can you help with waveforms?

When rocker switch is ON, TPS22811 is disconnected from load .

    Is the above statement correct?

You can first check with increasing the dVdT cap and see if same thing is happening.

If it's still happening, please probe the IN, OUT and IIN of the load switch.

I am also suspecting sudden change in load could result in a voltage spike which is triggering OVP.

You can also check out efuse devices from TI.com which has better protection and design implementation for the above application.

    Thanks

  • When rocker switch is ON, TPS22811 is disconnected from load .

    Is the above statement correct?

When rocker switch is ON, TPS22811 output goes to board connectors via the relay switch. However, when the issue happen, there is no load connected to board connectors.

Sure, will try the suggestions provided.

  • Hello David,

Also let me know the inrush current during no load.

    Thanks
