TPS40131 --Current Mode Control with Forced Current Sharing

HI 

 I will like to design a 3.3V @ 100 Amp VR, The TPS40131 say it can be " Forced Current Sharing"  can you explain a bit how is this achieve?

 I am planning to use two  TPS40131 with Two Phases make them share current, so I want to learn how the force current Sharing is done

    The TPS40131 is a two-phase synchronous buck controller and the load current is forced to share between two phases, not between phases controlled by 2 TPS40131. For your application, you may look at the stackable 2-phase controller TPS40140.

    I would like to recommend TPS40140 for your application. TPS40140 is the best 2 -phase stackable controller with same forced current sharing. The forced current is TI patent Pending. Please review attached presentation. The forced current sharing is in slide 36, 37, 38, 39.

    No, you could not use TRK pin as  Enable. You can use UVLO_CE1 and UVLO_CE2 as Enable. I attached the 4-phase 1.2V/100A schematic here for your reference.

    1. You are connecting BP5 to UVLO_CE to enable each phase, depending the connector J5, Correct?

    Yes, The schematic connected 12V/(10k+3.32k)*3.32k=3V to enable each phase, depending the connector J5.

    2. Also on the spec calls for a connection between BP5 and VREG thro 1 10ohm resistor, but on the schematic is only 4.7ohm. How is this resistor calculated?

    This resistor is only for noise filtering purpose. Either 10ohm or 4.7ohm should be ok. No need for calculation. Please follow the datasheet to use 10ohm.

    3. On the application that I intend to design either the VR should act as 4 phase VR at 100A or act as 2+2 phase VR (individual outputs) each one at 50A (selectable upon turning on)

    I would recommend 2+2 phase each one at 50A

    4. And also I need to have another VR with a single phase at 25A and can be scalable to 50A. For this one I guess the suggestion is to use TPS40180, Correct?

    5. One more question how much space on does it required for this 4 phase one?

I would like to recommend using TI NexFET CSD86350Q5D or CSD87350Q5D for your MOSFETs. CSD86350Q5D or CSD87350Q5D are power block which is integrated high side and low side MOSFET in one package. This will give you high power density and superior thermal performance.

    But is this part as preferred to use for new designs? I just dont want to go all the way with this part and then realize that 1 yr is going to be EOL...with you polocy only cover me for 1.5 yrs....

    Yes, this part is as preferred to use for new design. TPS40140 and TPS40180 are the best stackable controller and they are very popular parts in TI. We have a lot of DINs along with NexFET recently.  I don't think they will be obsoleted in the future. Don't worry about that.
