LM5005 max frequency on SYNC pin set by RT

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5005

Hello,

I have a customer who would like to operate the LM5005 with a clock frequency higher than 500kHz; however, the datasheet is not 100% clear on this.  According to the first page and the RT pin description, the recommended range is 50kHz to 500kHz.  However, there is a graph on page 6 of the datasheet that shows an operating range up to 800kHz with a RT=5K.  Can the LM5005 operate safely above 550kHz up to 800kHz? My customer would like to set this frequency between 625kHz and 650kHz..

 Thanks,

Ali

  • Ali,

Although this is not recommended the part should work above 500kHz but it will depend on the input and output conditions.  You will eventually run up against the minimum off time, especially at high VIN which will limit minimun duty cycle.  Also, in the opposite extreme you will eventually hit a mix duty cycle limit.  My suggestion is to give it a try under the operating condition.  As long as you keep the frequency as low as possible you will likely get away with the higher frequency.
