TPS65140: Using only Boost Converter Setup

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65140, TPS61085

Hi,

If using only the Boost Converter setup as shown in the "Typical Application Circuit" section of the datasheet, can you leave all of the other parts of the circuit shown (outside of the En,Enr, BASE, and various ground pins) open and still have normal operation?

Thanks!

  • Hello Nathaniel,

Normally the part should operate as expected, as long as you terminate the FB pins correctly. But I never tested this because when a single boost converter is necessary I recommend TPS61085/6/7 instead of the TPS65140.

I recommend terminating all input and GND pins to make sure that nothing happens due to noise in the system.
ENR, FB2, and MODE to GND
FB3 pin to REF (a capacitor on the REF pin is absolutely necessary)
FB4 open because ENR is low.

    Best regards,
    Brigitte

  • Thanks for the timely response Brigitte!

However, in this design the TPS65140 is not being used solely for Boost. In one of the variants there isn't a need to display, just boost the supply. Ideally, the same design would be used for all variants.
