Hello,

We need to design a battery charging circuit to charge 12V Lead acid battery from 12V solar panel input supply.
So is there any way to implement this? Please share the necessary reference designs or application notes.

Thanks for your input. We have already gone through this datasheet. It seems to be doubtful to charge 12V battery from 12V supply only. Also this note doesn't mention anything about input voltage rating.
Also in the EVM sheet. It is mentioned that the input voltage need to be minimum 1V greater than the battery voltage.

What is the MMPT votlage of that 12V solar panel? If it is 13V or below, bq24650 can't support. Please wait for our buck boost charge release which is in Q3 of 2016.

Hi Wrang,

Thanks again for your response and confirmation over use of BQ24650. We have already started with the prototype designing so would not be able to wait until Q3 when new buck boost IC is released.

Can you please suggest another way?

Hello Wrang,

Our MPPT voltage for 12V solar panel is around 17V. So I think this would be able to charge 12V Lead acid battery from 12V solar panel using BQ24650.

Please confirm.

Please check the solar panel maker about the maximum power point. Typically, the 12V panel has a 17V open circuit voltage which is the maximum voltage. But, the maximum power point is much lower than 17V.

Hello Wang,

Our solar panel 21V open circuit voltage and 17V of MPPT voltage. So this seems to be ok. Let me know your comments if any.
