Can the TPS7A16 be used to create a negative voltage from negative supply?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7A16, LM137HVQML, LM337-N

I need to generate -38V @100mA from a -50V supply. I was planning to use a TPS7A16 and connect my -50V to the ground pin (pin 4) and my circuit ground to the Vin pin (pin 8). Will this work? If not does TI have a solution that will work?

  • Hi Dave,

You will not be able to use the TPS7A16 to generate the -38V rail as this exceeds the abs max of the device. However, I did a quick parametric search and found the LM137HVQML, which has a min Vin of -50V and a min Vout of -48V with a max current of 1.5A. Although I am not really familiar with this device it seems that it will work in your application.

  • Thanks Mark,

Unfortunately availability of the LM137HV is non-existent. I am trying to find either a linear regulator or a shunt regulator that will meet my voltage specs, my current load is pretty small at 100 mA.

  • Hi Dave,

There is also the LM337-N that comes in a SOT23 that should also suit your application. This part says that it can be ordered through a distributor.
