BQ27421-G1: question regarding on-chip OTP

Part Number: BQ27421-G1

Team,

a customer of mine is trying to design in BQ27421-G1 and have the following question:

“ The device datasheet (http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/bq27421-g1.pdf) chapter 9.2.1. decribes the possibility of programming the One-Time Programmable Memory (OTP).  However I can’t find in any document the description for this procedure. What is described is only that the Standard Data Memory Parameter is configured in to the RAM.

Is there any possibility to write the most important parameters (for example Design Capacity, Design Energy, Terminate Voltage and Taper Rate) into the Non Volatile Memory (OTP), to that these Data will be initialized during Power On Reset (POR)? Or is it necessary for the Microcontroller to write these data manually after every POR?”

Thank you in advance for the answer.

  • Hi Leo,
You are right, The Host MCU has to write Design Capacity, Design Energy, Terminate Voltage, and Taper Rate in addition to updating full and empty battery conditions to match the system requirements, after every POR. bq2742-G1 is a ROM based gauge unlike flash gauge which retain parameters even it undergoes POR, I would recommend your customer to use a falsh gauge in case his application is prone to POR events in the field
    Best,
    Haidar
