UCC28180: Three phase PFC stage

Part Number: UCC28180
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC2817, UCC2817A

Hi all,

We are going to design a three phase pfc boost converter. We are planing to use three phase rectifier stage before the pfc stage. But still we haven't seen that  type of reference design. Can we use UCC28180 IC as pfc IC with three phase rectifier although it has been used with single phase rectifier in reference design ?

if there is a better suggestion than this, please mention.

Thank you

  • Hi,

We do not have a reference design available for a three phase pfc stage based on the UCC28180. so I can't say for sure.

The UCC2817 and UCC2854 family of pfc controllers have been used for many years in products that rectify the three phase supply (6 diode rectifier) and use the pfc controller on the DC side of the bridge. So it should be possible to also use the UCC28180 in this type of application. Usually with a three phase AC supply, you need to accurately limit the power and some form of voltage feedforward is required so that the current set level drops as the line voltage increases.
The UCC28180 does not have this feature so you may need to consider using the UCC2817A

  • Hi John,

Thank you for your fast response. Still we are having few questions regarding three phase PFC stage.
    1) What is the most used PFC topology for three phase systems?
    2) Are there any ICs that are specially used for PFC boost stage with three phase diode rectifier?
    2) Are there any ICs which are used for other three phase PFC typologies such as six switches, interleave, etc ?

    Thank you
  • In answer to your questions:
    (1) The boost topology is the most common for all pfc stages because of immunity from line disturbances, reliability , low component count and high efficiency.
    (2) and (3) There are no TI ICs made specifically for use with a three phase rectifier or three phase system
