UCC28630: flyback controller recommendation for on board charger

Hi, my customer is designing on board charger and need to choose a flyback controller.

The requirement is:

1. automotive qualified

2. current control mode, CCM mode, maximum duty cycle>50%

3. internal slope compensation, output overcurrent protection.

4. output power>150W.

Besides the four requirement above, it's better if PSR can also be met.

After searching our products, I recommended LM5021-Q1 to the customer which can meet their requirement, the only disadvantage is PSR is not met.

The customer is also interested in UCC28630, which can meet all requirement including PSR, the only problem is that it's not automotive qualified.

So my question is:

do we have the plan for UCC28630-Q1 part? If yes, what's the schedule?

If not, do we have any other devices that can meet all the requirement and will be automotive qualified by the end of June 2018?

thanks for your interest in UCC28630. I will need to check and get back to you later this week regarding future plans for UCC28630.

You might be interested in LM5022-Q1. It is an automotive qualified, current mode low side controller with a max duty cycle of 90%. There is an example of a flyback implementation with primary side regulation in TIDA-01344: www.ti.com/.../TIDA-01344

I've looked at the reference design, its input voltage is 10V-80V, can it be higher such as 220VAC regulated 311VDC?

Hi Howard,

Using LM5022-Q1 with this input voltage range should be ok. PMP7764 is an example of a flyback using LM5022 with an input voltage range of 30-800Vdc: www.ti.com/.../PMP7764

You will need to clamp the voltage on the Vin pin to not exceed 60V. In TIDA-01344, an emitter follower with a zener tied to the base is used to limit the voltage applied to the Vin pin.

I haven't been able to confirm future plans for UCC28630 yet but I will email you as soon as I get confirmation instead of posting in this public forum. Have you had a chance to suggest LM5022-Q1 to your customer? It is able to fulfill the design requirements you provided and could be a suitable option.

Yes, I've proposed it to the customer. But they need isolated flyback and the input voltage should reach as high as 311VDC. PMP7764 is non isolated. I wonder why TIDA-01344 can only reach 80V, it already has a clamp circuit to limit the Vin pin voltage.

Hi Howard,

80V was likely the maximum voltage they expected to see for the application TIDA-01344 was designed for. I see the input caps are rated to 100V and more than likely the transformer was designed to accommodate a voltage below 100V as well. The same general concept of clamping the Vin pin voltage would apply to a design with the input voltage range you are interested in however.
