BQ34Z100: How to connect to Charging/Protect Liion Board ?

Part Number: BQ34Z100
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

HI , i want to monitoring a charge /discharge single 18650 By bq34z100.

I got a charge/protect board. I try to bring the 2 but before burn something I would like to have your opinion.

I don't need LED or ALERT : just fuel gauge with I2c communication to the microcontroler. (some capacitor are missing , i know ;))

Because my Charge/Protect board got a (-) protection , in the reference shemas it's a (+) Protection.

Does someone told me how to conect the 2 ?

Thank you

  • Hi Christian,
You can connect you out+ to pack + and out _ to pack minus.
  • Thanks for answer, i try this schem like you said

, but Sense Resistor is in short cut . Where do i have to place it ?

  • Hi Christian,

please see below pic for connecting the sense resistor

i make little change to your schem :

    It's working good !!!!! Thank you .

Last question : i use 0.01 ohms sens resistor, with factory setting.

Average Current  (page12 : Standard Data Commande : AverageCurrent() AI 0x0A/0x0B mA) .    is twice as big.

Ex : my Ammeter read 200mA and the AverageCurrent() said  400mA   (the Current() I 0x10/0x11 mA   is same : is twice as big.)

Do you have an idea ?

  • Hi Christian,

Please, calibrate the cell at bqStudio. Apply the current and click Calibrate Gas Gauge.

Go to Calibration plug in menu => Apply charging or discharging current => put the measured current and check Calibrate Current box => Press Calibrate Gas Gauge button. The gauge should be unsealed.

  • Thanks for the answer, ok I saw what you describe in "bqStudio". At the moment I do not have a USB cable <=> i2c. Is there a command to send to the bq34z100 to do the calibration from my microcontroller?

  • I could not find the comand but if you manipulate CC Gain and Delta in DF, then you can change the current.

You measured 200mA and the AverageCurrent() said  400mA  because CC Gain and delta was half. If you increase two times of CC Gain and Delta, iAverageCurrent() will report 200mA.

  • Thank you, I will test these parameters.

Does using a 0.01Ohms resistor need to declare this value anywhere? Or is it already by default? or is it automatic? If I have it wrongly configured (default configuration) It must have a link with the measure that is displayed twice as large?

  • 10mohm is set by default. You have to calibrate in bqStudio or configure this value based off your sense resistor. If you use 5mohm, you have to set the value to 5 mohm and check if measured current is matched with the reported Average current. You have to change both CC Gain and Delta. If they are not configured correctly, it must have the error.

  • Thanks, i'll focused on both CC Gain and Delta. Hopes i don't need help anymore ;)

  • Bonjour Christian,
I suggest you close this post and open a new one if you need additional support.
