TPS2377-1: Mode A and Mode B

Part Number: TPS2377-1

Dear sir/Madam,

I need to design the PoE PD module for the 12W application. I did the design using TPS2377-1.

I have doubt about the Mode A and mode B types of transmission in PoE communication.

How do I make the circuit compatible with Alternative A and Alternative B?

I know Mode B was widely used in small applications. But our client required that power module compatible with both modes(A&B)

and also I need the document for "how to select proper center tapped transformer for different types of  PoE PD application".

  • Hi Vignesh,

I have restated & answered your questions below.

    1. How can I make my design compatible with Alt-A & Alt-B?
You can do this by using by adding a additional bridge rectifier for the Alt-B pairs and connecting the output of the bridge rectifier in parallel with the output of the bridge rectifier used for the Alt-A pairs.

    2. How to select a center tapped transformer for PoE?
Unfortunately, we do not have this document, but check with your magnetics manufacturer. They should be more helpful.

    Thank you,
    Tom A.
