TPS2066: Reverse Current ABS max

The TPS2066 allows reverse current to flow in the case where EN is held high (switch enabled) and the OUT pin is at a higher voltage than the IN pin. See the link below:

The question is what max current is allowed? The ABS max tables in the datasheet provides guidance that the current is "internally limited" but it is not clear if that applies in the reverse direction.

Specifically, if the input is taken low through a discharge circuit (say, a couple ohms to ground) and there is a large capacitance (say 100-200uF) on the output pins, would the TPS2066 be damaged as the output capacitance is discharged backwards through the switch?

    TPS2066 can't limit current in the reverse direction. We don't have specific max allowed reverse current value, the part might be damaged if this reverse current is to high.

  • Thanks Bob - we have seen failures of the device & it may be due to this reverse current. Do we have any guidance on the ABS max current for the device - perhaps based on some similar device?

    I am sorry that we don't have guidance on the ABS max current. But from my understanding, we know max Operating Tj(max)=150deg, Rds(on) and thermal resistance(Theta-Ja). So I think we can estimate max reverse current(I) this way: I*I*Rds(on)*Theta-Ja+Ta<Tj(max).

    Besides, we have some parts which have reverse voltage protection, such as TPS2553. Not sure if this part can work for some of customers' application.
