TPS40170: TPS40170

Part Number: TPS40170

Dear TI members

I am reviewing the schematic of my co-worker but have some question related to TPS40170

Q1) Input voltage : 12~24[V] , output voltage : 12[V]

I think that there is a problem when the input voltage is apply to 12[V].

     Is that correct ?

Q2) My co-worker said to me " TPS40170 can output 12V/20A(output).

       is that correct?

Because i didn't find out the output power/current from specification , I want to know that Output current with output voltage.

       Input Voltage  :24V , Output Voltage Setting : 12V Output Current : ?

Thanks

  • LP Kim,

Q1) You are correct. This is a buck so it can only output a voltage lower than the input. You can expect some dropout when VIN = 12V. At VIN=12V and IOUT = 20A you may expect around 10.5VOUT. You can probably get 12VOUT at 20A with an input voltage around 13.5V. Specific numbers can be simulated or tested on board.

Q2) TPS40170 can output 12V/20A with a good design. TPS40170 is a controller meaning the power limitation is mostly in the FETs selected. Of course TPS40170 has to be able to drive these FETs so they can't be too big. We find that the TPS40170 FET drivers are generally suitable for a 20A design.
