TPS2113A: Voltage on OUT without voltage on INx

Part Number: TPS2113A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2121

Hi,

Is the TPS2113A allowed to have a voltage applied to the OUT pin without a voltage on the IN1/IN2 pins (\EN tied to GND)?

In my design it is possible for a user to swap two connectors. In that situation there will be a maximum of 5,3V applied to the OUT pin (indefinitely). The IN1/IN2 pins will be at 0V. I assume this won't be a problem because a large capacitance on OUT will place it in the same situation if the inputs are powered down (albeit for a short period).

Regards,

Robbert

  • Hi Robbert,

Thanks for reaching out on E2E!

There shouldn't be any issue with voltage on the output while there's not voltage on the input.

I would like to suggest the TPS2121 instead of the TPS2113A. Not only does the TPS2121 contain a smaller package, it also has additional protection features such as overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, short circuit protection, and soft-start. The TPS2121 can also be used in multiple modes of operation to allow for manual switchover or automatic switchover.

Would this device work in this application instead?

    Thanks,

    Arthur Huang

  • Hello Arthur,

The TPS2121 should also work. I will use it in the design because of the additional features.

    Thanks for the support!
