UCC39002: Implemnt 1+1 redundent &power sharing based general industry Power supply

Part Number: UCC39002
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS40050, UCC29002, LM25145, TPS2412

Hello

We have a request to  implement  1+1 redundent &power sharing based general industry Power supply.

The general industry Power Supply is 220V/100V AC input , 12V /32A  DC Max output.  There are Sense+ and Sense- in the general Power supply.  Can we utilize the solution ( UCC39002+ TPS40050) ( The Application Report Number : SLUA311) to meet the request ?  Below is the sketch map, The blue box is the circuit we want to achieve redundent &power sharing .

  • Hello Carson

The UCC29002/1 is a good choice to force equal load sharing in this application. The TPS40050 device is not recommended for new designs, we suggest the LM25145 device instead.

You will need to add ORING diodes or ORING FETs to the outputs of the industry power supplies to deal with the case that one of them fails and its output goes short circuit. You can use a LM5050 High Side ORING FET controller to control the ORING FET.

  • Hi Colin

The load is much heavy in our application ( About 12V /30A max), Using DC-DC buck controller means the costs increases.

I am very sorry for delivering the wrong  Application Report Number, What I meant to refer to the Application Report is SLUA550. Now I correct my question.

    1. For the same requirement, Could I make the solution based Fiugre 2 in  SLUA550, which is UCC39002 + TPS2412.  UCC39002 is  for Load sharing, and TPS2412 is ORing controller( or LM5050) ,plus low resistrance FET . The 12V input of UC39002 is sourced from the 12V DC output of the industry power supply .

    2. If item 1 is Okay, Can the solution support hotpluggable?  The redudant &sharing module is planned to support hotplug. Below is  the sketch map .

  • Hello Carson

    That's ok, I understand.

Item 1 is ok. You can use the UCC29002 / TPS2412 for load sharing and redundant operation.

I am not an expert on our hot swap controllers so I will see if I can get one of my colleagues to answer this question.

    Regards

    Colin

  • Thanks Colin for looping me here.

    Hello Carson,

I don't think, hot-swap solution is needed for this application. As input voltages of the power modules are very close and when the modules going to be hot-plugged into live 12V back plane, the load sharing happens naturally between the modules.

  • Helo Rakesh

Thanks for answering.  I agree with your conclusion if the application scenario is as below:

Step1  Power module( industry power +UCC29002+ FET controller)  A  has been plugged into the backplane and is working normally to power the load.

Step2 Power module B is being pulgged into the backplane.

Step3 Power module B has been plugged into backplane and is in power sharing  with Power module A .

What I have doubts about is the following situation:

Step1  There is no Power module plugged into backplane. The load boards have plugged into backplane.

Step2  The module A is being plugged into backplane.

Does  overcurrent impact happern in Step2  ?

    Regards,

    Carson Wang

  • Hello Carson,

I agree, for your second scenario you would need hot-swap device to limit the inrush currents unless your power supply has inbuilt soft-start and overload protection features

In that case, I recommend to use TPS2474x Hot Swap and ORing Controller for this application.

    BR, Rakesh

  • Hello Colin,

If the hot swap requirement is removed,   Which is you prefer to ,and why?   UC29002+ TPS2412   or  UC29002+ LM5050 ?

    Regards

    Carson

  • Hello Carson,

We recommend TPS2412 for high current 12V applications because of low forward regulation voltage with TPS2412 which helps to minimize the power loss in the path.

    Best Regards,

    Rakesh
