TPS5405: Application in Air-conditioner

Part Number: TPS5405
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54202

Hi team,

I have noticed that TPS5405DR has win in the Air conditioner. So I have some question for that:

1. What kind of spec of the DCDC would the customer care in the air conditioner?

2. Why the TPS5405 could be the hero device in the air conditioner? what's the advantage of the 5405 comparing with the competitor?

I will appreciate your answer.

Best Regards,

  • Hi Zhihong,

One big thing in Applicances is the efficiency / thermal performance of the device.

In the trend that smart home appliances are getting popular, the WiFi module / Audio module / etc. applied in these products (such as Air Conditioners) are making the power consumption on the motherboard larger than before. DC/DC such as TPS5405/TPS54202 are often applied to support higher efficiency and better thermal performance.

You can check on a series of TI Designs (TIDA-00946/7/8/9) that introduces how to apply TPS54202 to replace a typical LDO in home appliances and how it helps to eliminate the need of heat sink on the BOM.

Another aspect Appliances customers would typically care about is the EMI performance.

Why TPS5405 / TPS54202 got popular in this market is particially benefiting from the Spread Spectrum feature. You can check on a brief introduction on this feature on Section 7.3.12 in page 12 in the datasheet of TPS54202. As a result, the signal will have a wider bandwidth but lower peak. This would help customer's system on passing the EMI test.

My answer is relatively high level since your questions is pretty general. Let us know if there is a specific technical problem we need to solve. :)

  • Hi Wanqi,

    Thanks for your specific replying.

Based on your answer, I think the Iq could also be a key spec for the customer to lower the power consumption, do I understand correctly?

  • Hi Wanqi,

Based on your answer, if the customer want the lower power consumption, why not use the Synchronous Step Down Converter like TPS54202?

  • Hi Wesley,

Reliability comes first. Appliance customers have no strong willing to use a new part as the TPS5405 can meet their requirement. As the Iq and cost is more and more important, customers are starting to use the TPS54202.
