TPS2120: Implementing power switch

Dear Sirs, good night

Looking to add a power switch for an application.

It will receive power from a wall adapter (5V) or from 3x AA Cells.

The TPS2120 seems a good candidate but I would like to be sure if it is protected against reverse battery polarity.

Is there another alternative to this chip?

    You can actually have the device protect against reverse polarity conditions by simply adding a diode on the ground network as such:

    See the 10.6 Reverse Polarity Protection with TPS212x section in the datasheet. Other than that if you need even more protection a good way to do this would be to place an ideal diode such as an LM74700 on the input rails for input protection.

    The only thing that worries me is the is the voltage drop that the diode will introduce for the battery.

    What are the current ranges you are expecting to go through the TPS2120? The LM66100 is rated for a maximum of 1.5A so if you need something bigger you'll need to go with something like the LM74700

    I am expecting currents <1 A.

    The quiescent current for LM66100  is lower for this device.

    Is there any drawback in using a combination of these chips for this solution?

    Nope! This sounds like a good application for the LM66100 given that your currents are less than 1A. Feel free to post your schematic once you have a prototype and we will be happy to review it to make sure everything is connected properly.
