TPS259827LEVM: TPS259827LEVM Cannot start up with load

Part Number: TPS259827LEVM

Hi team,

My customer is evaluating TPS259827L with our EVM (TPS259827LEVM). They configured the EVM for 15A current limitation and apply a 24V input power supply. The problem is the system cannot start up if they connect a 2.4 ohm load resistor on output (the output is 0V). While it can start up correctly if removed the load resistor. What is wrong? how should they configure the EVM to make the efuse start up with 10A load?
Here is customer's EVM configuration:
J4: OPEN
J9: 5-6
J10: 7-8
J6: 1-2
J11: OPEN
J8: SHORT
J7:2-3

Thank you!

John

  • Hi John,

The efuse starts up in either current limit or dvdt inrush control mode. In any of the startup mode, there will be power dissipation across the FET as there is voltage drop (Vin - Vout) across the FET and current flowing through the FET. If the capacitance is very high, the power dissipation across the FET can be high enough to increase the temperature across the FET to greater than thermal shut down threshold and turn OFF the FET.

The possibility of shut down during startup is more possible if there is load along with capacitance because the source has to charge the capacitance + Supply load current. This will increase the power dissipation in the FET as well as increase the duration of startup.

Iin = Iinrush (to charge the capacitance) + Iload

Please refer to section 9.2.2.5 of datasheet for more understanding about this concept.

  • Hi John,

Do you have any other questions ? If not, can we close this thread ?
