TPS2511-Q1: TPS2511-Q1 ESD rating

Part Number: TPS2511-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2511, STRIKE

Dear Sir,

my customer had tested 5KV ESD contact for DP(6pin),DM(7pin) lines of USB connector.

all of 5/5 tested samples are died. but pins 6 and 7 are 7.5KV rating.

could you explain detail for this issue?

  • Hi,

I want to know the test setup of the 5KV ESD test ,  is that using the IEC61000-4-2 or HBM ?

To be care, this two standard is big different and the test method is not same. The TPS2511-Q1 only support HBM level 7.5KV but not IEC61000-4-2.

  • Dear Michael.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

My customer is using ESD Gun of ONYX 30.

    1. How to setup for test HBM. could you let me know test method?

    2. What are different between IEC61000-4-2 or HBM? could you explain that?

  • Hi ,

There are several differences between the HBM and IEC 61000-4-2 standard that are immediately obvious. If you use the IEC standard to test the TPS2511, it will be failed even though you say the test voltage is 5KV , In the same 5KV , IEC may create 10A to the TPS2511 compare to HBM only create about 3A  energy. I have not experience with the ESD gun set up for IEC or HBM, you can consult your supplier of the ESD gun .

Beside the ESD gun setup, in your test board you soldering a long cable to test, this long cable will created the equivalent inductance to the TPS2511-Q1. I suggest you test the USB port directly or using a shorter and stronger wire for this test.

The most important differences are as follows:

    • the amount of current and I2 R power released during a voltage strike

    • the rise time of the voltage strike

    • the number of voltage strikes repeated in the tests

  • Hi,

I attached the link which I search in the internal , I think this material will help you to understand the different between the HBM and IEC
