EV2300-084: FW 3.1R not working, FW 3.1C working

Part Number: EV2300-084
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQMTESTER, BQ40Z50, BQPRODUCTION, MKST-3P-ALT-EV2300

This is a continuation from this thread: https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/196/p/952426/3520727#3520727

onto a second computer, the second computer only worked with 3.1C which was the same behavior as before. The goal with this test was to remove windows + drivers as a potential issue.

With this in mind, we want to go back to our original question, is there a way to downgrade to previous FW versions to see if we can get these working on the rest of their test computers?

  • Hello Nicholas,

Testing with multiple computers and the issue still occurs?

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • There are multiple versions of EV2300 hardware and firmware over time because each build may have replaced parts that were not available. The "USB Tester ready" sticker was added to EV2300 boxes that were capable of supporting bqMTester. If that sticker is missing, then there is no guarantee that the EV2300 will work.

I know that people have worked around this kind of problem by changing hardware. Here is a link to a product that uses external power to drive bqMTester.

You can try using the same method and see if it solves the problem.

  • Hi Shirish,

Thank you for calling out the alternative board, I remember you sending me this over email. My only reservation was that the alternative only lists the BQ20x and BQ30x devices as being compatible, but not the BQ40Z50 which the customer is using in this situation. Does the alternative board support the BQ40Z50?

    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Hello Nick,

We have not tested the EV2300 alternative for bqProduction yet. Maybe that will happen soon...

My intent was to point you to the small modification that this EV2300 alternative details for it to work with bqMTester. The documentation is on the thrid party page.   This modification bypasses the Vout drive requirement from the EV2300. I was thinking you could try the same on the EV2300 that are not "USB Tester ready" and see if it works.

Let me know if that works.

    Regards,

  • Hi Shirish, Some follow up questions from the customer on this:

For the information about “The EV2300 may not be able to drive the bqMTester if it does not have the sticker”, can you find the details of what causes the EV2300 to not able to drive the bqMtester? Could apply an external power source to the EV2300 be possible to work around the issue? As I mentioned before, the EV2300 is able to drive the LEDs as long as the cable is not connected to begin with.

We opened up the 2 EV2300s and found that the device that works is a Rev D and the one that doesn't work is Rev B. The Rev B board is the one with new firmware on it (3.1r). I asked at the beginning but wanted to confirm, is there anyway to downgrade the firmware on these boards as this older board with newer firmware seems to be incompatible.

    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Hello Nick,

I cannot imagine why there wouldn't be a way to downgrade firmware. The question is whether it can be done at customer site.

The EV2300 has been obsolete for a while. The schematics are available in the User guide. If someone downloaded the user guide at time of purchase, i would expect it to match what was shipped. The User guide is the best source to figure out what changed. I have not tried applying an external power source to the EV2300, but i can see that as an option. However please be careful not to damage to the EV2300.

I also asked if the MKST-3P-ALT-EV2300 can work with bqProduction. It does not work at present but there is an effort underway to make it work.

Let me know if you have more questions

  • One more detail i found out. EV2300 boards with 3.1r were specifically for use with single cell devices using HDQ.

I think i mentioned that 3.1r should work because i thought that it is a newer version of firmware than 3.1m. After receiving this detail, i am not sure if 3.1r boards are expected to work.

  • Hi Shirish,

Thank you for the update on this. For the downgrade option:

    1. Do we have programming instructions on this?
    2. Where can we get the firmware versions?

    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

The EV2300 has been obsolete for a while. It is going to be hard to get information.
