Hi. Expert.

My customer is using TPS61178RTE as WLED backlight.

What is the maximum sink current of each LED channel?

He set it to 80mA per channel, is that possible?

He requested a circuit review due to board heating issues.

He says it needs a sink current of about 500mA.

It is also possible to recommend other devices.

Hi Robin

TPS61176 maximum current per channel is 35mA. But customer can combine three channels together to get 80mA capability.

Please provide more application information so I can recommend most proper device to you, such as VIN range, output current per channel, No. of LED per channel, No. of channels and so on.

Vin range is 4v to 6v.

Vout is 13V.

He said the number of channels doesn't matter.

The required current on the LED side is 500mA.

How about TPS61169? It's cheaper and simpler featured with single channel.

Can TPS61169 output 13V, 500mA?

Hi,

Its current limit is 1.8A@typ and Vin range is 2.7V-5.5V. e.g. Vin=5V, IL=13Vx500mA/5V=1.3A<1.8A. But, considering of efficiency and ripple current, you'd better have a detailed calculation.
