TPS7B82-Q1: Thermal shutdown and Current limit query

Part Number: TPS7B82-Q1

Hi,

We are using TPS7B8250QDGNRQ1 in the design. Please provide response for the below queries,

1)On pg 7, the current limit is provided as 510mA. In our design, if the output is getting shorted, then we are getting the junction temperature of 173C. The thermal shutdown will happen at 175C. The junction temperature rating of LDO is 150C. Whether with 173C, it will get damaged? What will be the state of the LDO at 173C?

2)When the junction temperature reaches 175C, please provide the time taken by the LDO to enter into thermal shutdown (i.e LDO will be disabled completely)?

3)What will be the state of LDO when the junction temperature is in between 150C and 175C?

Thanks

Viswa

  • Hi Sri Viswa,

1)On pg 7, the current limit is provided as 510mA. In our design, if the output is getting shorted, then we are getting the junction temperature of 173C. The thermal shutdown will happen at 175C. When the junction temperature is approaching the thermal shutdown, the pass-FET of the LDO will be turned off.

2)When the junction temperature reaches 175C, please provide the time taken by the LDO to enter into thermal shutdown (i.e LDO will be disabled completely)?

We don't have a measurement on this timing, it could go from micro-second to milli-seconds for the thermal shutdown to be fully engaged.

3)What will be the state of LDO when the junction temperature is between 150C and 175C?

When the LDO is operating out of the recommended temperature range but under the thermal shutdown, the LDO may go out of spec including accuracy and other characteristics.
