LM5020: LM5020 - TIDA-00711(TIDUCO3A)

Part Number: LM5020
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00711, PMP21488

Hi, TIDA-00711 based on LM5020 is an ISOLATED 50W DC to DC converter. However, in schematic on page 6 of the design document, the DC input ground is labelled as PGND and the main secondary 12V , 3A  return is also mentioned as PGND !!!!

If input ground and the secondary ground are the same then is it isolated DC to DC converter ?

  • Hi Atul,

Thank you for the question.  It is a misunderstanding. The LM5120 CAN implement an isolated converter, but it can also implement an non-isolated converter.  Isolated or non-isolated is just whether you have an isolation boundary between your input and output.  If you use an opto-coupler to feed back the output into to the IC on the input side, like in PMP21488, you have an isolated power supply.

    Hope this clarifies.

  • Hi Youhao Xi,

Thanks for your lightening fast reply. Yes, it clarified my doubt. Thanks once again.

Can i design an isolated power supply using LM5020MM-1 using the Webench ?

    Regards

  • Hi Atul,

First, sorry for the typo LM5120, which is actually a different part while I meant the LM5020.

Unfortunately it seems we haven't have the LM5020 covered by Webench at this moment. However, we do have Pspice and Tina model released under the LM5020 product folder at TI.com.  Please use it for your design.

    Thanks,

    Youhao
