AM6548: How many no of PRUs

Hi There,

I am confuse about the no. of PRU in the AM65x processors. Datasheet says it have two- PRU cores and somewhere i have read it has 3x PRU_ICSSG. I am sure there is some difference. Can any one help me to understand the meaning of the both the cases? Does two core means AM65x has only two PRUs which can be accessible just like AM335x?

I have use case in mind. I was thinking to use each PRU to sense the ADC data individually (at least 16 pins each), just like separate MCU. I know we can use two PRUs in am335x but can we use three such pru if we use am65x?

3xICSSG instances 6 PRUs per ICSSG and 2 RGMII/MII ports per ICSSG

The below section of the data sheet provides the IOs supported.

6.3.21 PRU_ICSSG

Yes i am considering Am65x for our upcoming product, but i need to have clear understanding about PRUs in AM65x. Currently we are using AM335x where we are using two PRUs simultaneously with separate firmware, where we have connected two different parallel ADCs. Same way, i am assuming we will be able to use three PRUs in AM65S, right? or we can use more.

Also can you please help me to understand first two point of the attached screenshot from Datasheet.

What is mean by auxiliary RISC CPU core, Does this means we can use 4 separate programmable units?

Hello Dhaval

I recommend that you evaluate AM64 instead of AM65. Our ability to support AM65 is limited and we have also stopped any new development or feature addition on AM65. On AM335x where you using Linux or RTOS?

If RTOS or bare metal, then I highly encourage you to also look at AM24 family of devices.

Hi Mukul,

We are using linux in AM335x, we were thinking to use AM65 just because to have higher no. of PRUs.

Have you had a look at the AM64x capabilities.

I would assume if you are transitioning from the AM335x, the AM64x could be a simpler solution from the design point of view.
