AM6548: # Error: "main_cpsw0_qsgmii_phyinit" not defined

Part Number: AM6548
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869HM, DP83867IR

Hi,

We have developed a custom design using the AM6548, and are trying to debug the hardware/software functionality of the Ethernet ports. When we boot the Linux Kernel on the board, we get the error:

# Error: "main_cpsw0_qsgmii_phyinit" not defined (see full log for more info)

Our questions:

What does this error mean, and what is causing it? Are there any tests that we can run to ensure that the Ethernet port is functional in Linux?

Things to note: In our design, we have replaced the Ethernet transceiver DP83867IR/CR with DP83869HM.

Appreciate the help.

  • Hello Akm,

Which SDK version are you using?

We know that this "error" message shows up in SDK 9.2 for TI EVMs (AM64x EVM and AM62x EVM) as well but it does not impact the ethernet ports on the EVM themselves. My guess is that this "error" message results from some part of the U-boot environment loading looking for that "main_cpsw0_qsgmii_phyinit" definition. As far as I know, we don't support any qsgmii interface modes so this "error" should not be a concern. Additionally, since this message shows up as part of the U-boot messages before the Linux kernel starts, I don't believe it will have an impact in ethernet functionality in Linux.

How many ethernet interfaces have you expect to see in Linux? Do you have a MAC address assigned to each ethernet interface? You can check these with "ifconfig" or "ip a".

From your log, it looks like you have two icssg ethernets link up - which means you have a link establishment with the link partner your custom board is connected to.

The best way to test if Ethernet ports are functional in Linux is to connect the ethernet interface/port under test to a host PC/known working device. Do a ping from custom board to host PC (test transmit packets) and ping from host PC to custom board (test receive packets). Check for 0% packet loss from the ping results. Before you do this, please make sure all ethernet interfaces that you expect are available with a MAC address associated with them.

You can additionally check "ethtool -S <interface name" to see if there are any rx error frames on both host PC and custom board.
