whether external pullup/pulldown resistors are needed？

i want to connect two DM8168' io port each other for data communication. one dm8168 chip of the IO ports is configured as output mode，another dm8168 chip of the IO ports is configured as input mode.

my question is whether external pullup/pulldown resistors are needed between io port for meeting the level requirement.

Do you mean you are planning to connect one DM816x device to another DM816x device? And you are planning to connect 1st DM816x device GPIO module to 2nd DM816x device GPIO module?

When you do not expect the output pins to be non-active during input pins are active, then you do not need external pull resistors.

The main purpose of the pull resistors is to prevent floating of input pins.
