66AK2G02: Is software change required if we use DDR3L with faster speed grade from reference design(K2G ICE)

Part Number: 66AK2G02

Hi champs,

K2G EVM and ICE boards both use Micron DDR3L Speed Grade -125

K2G ICE has MT41K64M16TW-125:J

The data sheet of DDR3L suggests the DDR3L with faster speed is backward compatible to slower DDR3L.

Can speed grade -107 part, MT41K64M16TW-107, be used without any software(e.g. C:\ti\pdk_k2g_1_0_5\packages\ti\board\src\iceK2G\iceK2G_ddr.c) change?

Thanks.

  • Hi Brian,

I've forwarded this to the K2G software experts. Their feedback should be posted here.

  • Brian,

Please note that K2G device only support 800 MTs and 1066 Mts speeds so even if you use the higher speed grade memory, you will need to clock it at 1066 Mts (max). you can use a higher speed grade DDR part as you can see with the EVM (we are using a 1600 speed grade part) but you need to configure your DDR parameters for the highest speed that you plan to use which is 1066 Mts.

The board RTOS software that you are using is currently setting the DDR to 800 Mts setting but I can provide you the DDR updates for 1066 and the updated GEL file. So, if you plan to use DDR at 800 Mts speed then there is no change required in software but if you plan to use 1066 then you will need to update the DDR PLL values and the EMIF configuration register values to account for the higher speed.

Rule of thumb for software is to set DDR timing to max speed you plan to use in the product while interfacing with DDR part (which may be supporting higher speeds than the SOC supports)

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Rahul
