AFE7071: I/Q Generator Recommendation

Part Number: AFE7071
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE7070

I’m looking for some suggestions of what can generate I/Q data to send to the AFE7071 in the 10s of MHz..  I am thinking of using a lookup table to convert the binary data to I/Q.  However, I am having some difficulty finding something that can output data in the 10s of MHz.  I tried a microcontroller, but the parallel GPIO was not reliable enough.  The next thing I can think of to try would be a CPLD or FPGA, but I wonder 1) What options are there other than a CPLD 2) if a CPLD is the best option, what TI CPLD would be a good starting point?

  • The AFE707x typically interfaces with an FPGA to provide the digital sample data.  TI does not have an FPGA /CPLD/processor device that is suitable for use with the AFE707x.  If you are looking for a test platform, you can interface to TI's TSW1400 pattern/capture card.  With that platform, you can upload your own DAC pattern.  Otherwise, a medium to low grade FPGA from an outside vendor should be sufficient.

Note, you can generate CW signal without any digital interface by using the NCO feature (AFE7070).  With the NCO, you can specify a CW frequency in 10's of MHz and up-convert with the modulator to the RF frequency of choice.
