PGA460PSM-EVM: Interface PGA460PSM to GUI VIA USB2ANY board

Part Number: PGA460PSM-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: USB2ANY, , PGA460, BOOSTXL-PGA460, MSP430F5529, MSP-EXP430F5529LP

Hi,

Is it possible to connect PGA460PSM-EVM to GUI with USB2ANY board to get the distance data.

If i connect the PGA460PSM-EVM to GUI with USB2ANY, USN2ANY board is detected but PGA460 is not detected.

please refer the below image.

  • Hello Sridhar,

I have not tested connecting a USB2ANY board to interface the PGA460 with the GUI. Please ensure that the connections you provided to the USB2ANY board are RXD, TXD, and GND. If the ground is not established between the USB2ANY board ant the PGA460PSM-EVM  the communications will not work as intended. Additionally, once the connection is established with the USB2ANY board did you press the "check for PGA-460" button? Please let me know if these recommendations worked on your end.

    Best,

    Isaac

  • Also, I forgot to mention to verify that the PGA460PSM-EVM is being powered when checking the connection tot he GUI.

  • Hi Isaac,

    1. Ground establishment ------> Ground was also connected along with the TXD and RXD.

    2.  once the connection is established with the USB2ANY board did you press the "check for PGA-460" button? ---------> YES I pressed the  "check for PGA-460" button but still it shows the same Status(N\A or Wrong ADD)

3.I forgot to mention to verify that the PGA460PSM-EVM is being powered when checking the connection tot he GUI. -------> PGA460PSM-EVM was powered during the GUI connection.

The above mentioned recommendations are checked, but the issue is still there.

  • Hello Sridhar,

Thank you checking verifying these things. I was able to check a USB2ANY with the GUI and did not achieve communication through the USB2ANY. The reason the USB2ANY does not work with the device is because the GUI firmware is not installed on the USB2ANY device, hence whenever different things are selected on the GUI the USB2ANY device does not recognize the commands any nothing occurs. There is communication between the devices since I was able to test setting up the USB2ANY and the PGA460 setup on the MSP430 and was able to read the communication traffic.

The device is recognized because the USB2ANY device uses the same MSP430F5529 as the BOOSTXL-PGA460. My recommendation is if you have a MSP430F5529 hand then you can flash the firmware and evaluate the PGA460PSM this way. You may be able to also flash the USB2ANY device with the necessary firmware but the only problem there is that you would need to check which pin would be configured on the USB2ANY device to be the RX and TX for UART communication.

If you plan on bypassing the GUI and using just the USB2ANY software, one issue that I did notice is that the data shown on the USB2ANY device is not correct because it cannot take into account the start bit that is transmitted by the PGA460.

    Isaac

  • Hi Isaac,

    Thanks for the update,

where can i find the firmware for USBANY.

is it possible to flash the firmware of USBANY using the PGA460 GUI.

  • Hello Sridhar,

Any day. You can flash the PGA460 GUI firmware using the GUI. It can be located on when you open up the GUI under File->Flash Program->MSP-EXP430F5529LP.

But before trying that it might be worth wile to check how easy it would be to flash the USB2ANY firmware back onto your device. I did not see a way to do it in the USB2ANY GUI and I have never tried flashing a USB2ANY device from the PGA460 GUI.

You can also buy an MSP at this link and upload the firmware code to this one: https://www.ti.com/tool/MSP-EXP430F5529LP#order-start-development

Then you would only need to connect the appropriate pins to the MSP even though they are the same as we spoke about I will link this previous post here: https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors-group/sensors/f/sensors-forum/932623/pga460psm-evm-connect-pga460psm-evm-to-gui---which-firmware-to-use

    Best,
