mmWave radar sensor for healthcare domain. Safe?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843

Hi Team,

I see a possibility to use the mmWave radar sensor in a product that is going to be installed in hospital rooms.

I am worried as I don't find any information/recommendation on whether mmWave radar sensor is safe to use in Healthcare/Medical domain? Will it affect the medical instruments in the room?

Please help me to understand the same.

  • Hello Milan,

The mmWave sensors should not interfere with most other medical equipment in the room, similar to how bluetooth or wifi does not interfere. However, I am not an expert on all/any medical sensors, so if there is a specific sensor using 60-64GHz for measurements or data transmission, there is always a possibility. However, with the frequency modulated radar system such as the IWR6843, there is typically very small chance of interference even if there are other such sensors in the room. Also, mmWave radar has no effect on humans at the low power levels used.

    Regards,

    Jackson
