TMP441: Beta Correction Disabled

Folks,

I have the TMP421 in an existing design and am looking to second source that with the TMP441. The only differences that I can see are the DeviceID register and the added beta-correction register (0x0Ch).

Will my existing TMP421 software work on the TMP441 without any changes? Or do I have to write to the beta correction register to disable it?

Hi Don,

TMP441 will work without changes, but it may report a slightly different remote temperature than a TMP421 in the same situation. It depends on whether the Auto beta feature detects low beta on your junction. If you force disable beta correction, the output should be identical.

Would you please quantify a value for beta that would be considered "high"? I would assume anything above 50-100 (i.e. 2n3906). Also what would be considered low beta?

Don,

I agree 50-100 or above is desirable. Problems with beta start occurring at 1 and below. Obviously you would not design a discrete transistor with such a beta; we see this low beta on temperature junctions integrated into other IC.
