TUSS4440: Unable to acquire distance through ice

First of all I'm a colleague of Gauthier (in vacation), who posted this thread : https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors-group/sensors/f/sensors-forum/1236663/tdc1000-c2000evm-piezo-electric-ice-monitoring?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=tdc1000 therefore I work in the same conditions as him.

We're trying to measure a layer of ice from 2 to 10cm thick, with a precision of about 1mm with piezoelectric measurements.
We've already tried to use TDC1000-C2000EVM and now we're trying to use BOOSTXL-TUSS4440 with the default Piezo.

However I'm unable to acquire any value while measuring through ice : I only see the first "emitted" spike.

With a colleague, we tried to measure how much water (because slower propagation speed) was in a tank. We were unable to measure anything below ~35cm with the TUSS4440. We were using mostly default configuraiton with the TUSS4440 GUI.

Is there any recommended configuration with either BOOSTXL-TUSS4440 or TDC1000-C2000EVM to measure in desired conditions (2-7cm of ice where speed of sound is 1480m/s, with an accuracy of ~1mm) ?

    Thanks for posting to the sensors forum! There seems to be quite a few questions on here so let me try to address them as best as I can.

    Is the transducer mounted directly to the ice or is the transducer mounted to a tank then trying to detect the ice? 

    The are a couple of issues with this type of measurement is that if you have the transducer waveform traveling through several mediums and every time the signal travels through a different medium there is a fraction of it that is reflected. The amount reflected is dependent on the acoustic impedance of the object. Are you using an external voltage or the USB voltage to perform your tests?

    The original issue I had with using the TDC1000 for this type of measurement is that the excitation voltage is really small so its not very ideal for solids. I dont have much experience working with measurements over ice but I assume you still need a decent voltage to have the signal propagate through the solid properly.

    The transducer that comes with the TUSS4440 is a 40kHz transducer which means that you will have lesser resolution compared to the 1MHz transducer that was used for the previous test. Also note that your ringing period will be much longer due to the lower frequency. Ideally since the distance is very small 2-7cm I would typically recommend using a bistatic measuring method. Where two transducers are required one is strictly the emitting the ultrasonic pulses and the other is just listening for the return.
