SN74LV4052A: COM Line Voltage

Hi,

We are powering the IC with 3.3V. The select lines operate at this voltage.

Can we apply 5V on the COM pins?

    The short answer is no as the analog I/O pins are rated at VCC + 0.5V (with input voltage limited to 5.5V max) - so for your system 3.8V - and you the max voltage passed should be approximately ~VCC (so if 3.6V were input a max of 3.3V should show on the output)

    The long answer is maybe - 

    From the abs max table in the datasheet - the max switch I/O voltage has 2 notes. Note 2) "The input and output negative-voltage ratings may be exceeded if the input and outpu current ratings are observed" - Since there are diodes to ground and VCC on the I/O pins they will conduct at ~0.5V above the VCC voltage - they have a max current of 50mA through them. So if the input signal is going to be greater than VCC + 0.5V, a series resistor is needed in front of the mux input to essentially exchange voltage for current but there is some resistance in the diode so less current is always a better option if this is the way you want to move. So you can - but I wouldn't recommend it as it opens up more possible problems - but as long as the current into those diodes is limited to 50mA so that the device can actually clamp to ~VCC + 0.5V on the input there shoulnd't be much of an issue.
