MUX36S16: Design RS-232 multiplexer

Part Number: MUX36S16

Hi,

I want to design a multiplexer of 16 rs-232 channels to one UART (for microprocessor) based on article AN588 (file attached).

My problem is that i don't want to use another power supply of +-15V, so according to AN588 i design the attached schematic.

Does the MUX36S16 will work with V+=5.5V and V-=-5.5V while the RS-232 inputs level is +-15V ?

Thanks

Nir

  • Nir,

The MUX36S16 will work similar to the MAX399 multiplexer described in the AN588 document.  This means you are going to have the same issue with both devices that the recommended operating conditions of both the MAX399 device and MUX36S16 device limits the voltage on the signal path to Vss min to Vdd max.

Currently TI doesn't have a solution that will allow you operate the multiplexer at +/- 5.5V and support +/- 15 signals.

    Thank you,

    Adam
