TS5A3160: Using a TS5A3160 to swtich a RS485 bus line

Part Number: TS5A3160

Hi,

I'm using a TS5A3160 to switch a RS485 bus line however it isn't working as I expected. Yellow and pink plots are Line A of RS485 bus, pink is from node 1 and yellow from node 2. Switch is between node 1 and 2.

After the first master command, the switch change it's position (blue plot is the IN line of TS5A3160). The second command of master arrived at node 2 (yellow) with some signal malfunction however it is sufficient for it to recognized the command and answer to the command.

Can you help me identify the problem?

  • ee06091,

First I would like to visit the voltage level seen in the scope captures.  The TS5A3160 I/O pins can only support voltages up to the supply voltage.  In the schematic above you have the supply pin set to 3.3 V but are placing voltages > 5 V on the signal path.  This violates the recommended operating conditions stated in the datasheet.

Does your issue reduce if you operate the device with 5 V supply and make sure the signals sent to the switch are less than the supply voltage?

What voltages do you need to support?  Maybe we need to look at using a device that will support those voltages instead.

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • ee06091,

Do you have any update from your testing? Do you have any new data to share or questions?

    Thank you,
    Adam
  • ee06091,

We haven't heard from you in a while so I assume you have resolved your issue and I will close this thread. If you have additional questions you may reply here to reopen the thread or create a new one.

    Thank you,

  • Hi,

Thank you for your help. Power it with 5v make it work as expected!
