CCS5.1 - Extremely slow on startup

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO

Dear All,

There is a widespread disappointment with CCSv5.1.0-M9 in terms of its startup speed.  We are currently in the process of migrating from CCS4.

The startup time sometimes is in excess of 7 minutes!!!

Are there any tips on how this can be sped up?

Will there be another release before the final release?

Thanks,

Krishna Allam

  • Hi Krishna,

first of all there is actually a production release of v5 out there.  It is v5.1.1.1 currently and is available here

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Download_CCS

Note that after the beta releases, CCSv5 requires a separate license to v4.  With an active subscription you can ugrade.

A 7 minute startup is not at all typical.   Is sounds like perhaps a proxy or internet connection issue. When CCS starts up it checks various things.

Please go to Window->preferences->general->starup and shut down.  Try disabling the top 4 items for example.

    Please keep us informed.

    Best REgards,

    Lisa

  • Hello Lisa,

Thanks for the prompt feedback.  I am actually using the latest release.  In addition, I tried your suggestion and it sure does help but not by much.

Please note that this is a problem that is being experienced by multiple user of CCSv5.  Please see the attached file for more details.  I have

attempted to capture information related to CCSv5 with various startup options, compared it standard eclipse and CCSv4 on an XP and Windows 7 system.

I hope this data helps with a resolution to this issue, or may be you can tell us what we may doing incorrectly.

  • Hi Krishna,

there is definitely something blocking or interfering as you should not be experiencing minutes start up time as you are.

There are a few things we can do/check.  First please check firewall and antivirus programs for interference.

I have attached a file which will help us exactly log the startup to track if there is a specific plug-in causing the delay.

Could you please save the attached file in CCSinstallRoot\ccsv5\eclipse and then start CCS with "ccstudio -debug" from command line. There should be a new DOS window that pops up that will have a bunch information printed on startup time of various plugins.  Could you please save this and send it to us?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

Thanks again for the prompt follow on this issues.  I am not sure if there is any firewall and antivirus programs interference.  Is there any reason to believe that we need to be concerned about this on CCSv5 versus CCSv4.1, CCS3.3 and Standard Eclipse because none of these have such a serious startup problem.

The feedback you have requested (using "ccstudio -debug") is in the attached document, appended to the bottom.

Please note there are three separate startups, first one is immediately after powering up the PC, this takes about 10 mins...and  towards the right on bottom corner there is progress bar that keep showing a growing progress bar with the text that says "Searching for new products..."  This never completes even after 30 mins...CCS has to be killed.

The second screen shot indicates the output after the second startup...similarly  the 3rd screen shot is after the third startup.

Please note that the last three lines at the bottom of each screen shot, indicates three metrics that may give you some clues:

    Time To Load Bundles:  328        15               0

    Starting Application:     11906        1297          1234

    Application Started:      501547     15360         15828

The red, blue and green indicate the numbers correponding to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd startup respectively.

I hope this helps.  Let me know if you need any additional information.

    Thanks,

    Krishna

  • Hi Krishna,

Could you repeat the cold start scenario again with the attached file from Lisa renamed to just ".options"? It looks like forum posting appeneded a bunch of characters which caused eclipse not to find the .options file and hence it did not generate actual information that I was looking for. see picture for what the output should look like. Could you also let me know where CCS is installed? i.e. anything different about that directory?

  • Greetings Martin!

Great to hear from you!  Please see the attached document with the screen shots containing the info you requested.

I hope it helps get to the bottom of the issue.  Please don't hesitate to call me at 281-285-8432 or email me directly at kallam@slb.com, if you think this would be more expeditious and appropriate.  I am ok with keeping this exchange on the forum as well so that others can benefit from the findings.

In regards to the installation, it is on the D: drive and there is nothing special about this drive (as far as I know) or the directory.

    Your help is much appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Krishna

  • Greetings Martin, Lisa,

The slow startup issue appears to be related to McAfee.  If I disable it during startup,  CCS comes up almost normally.

I guess we can use this as a general workaround...

I hope this is something you will be able to investigate further and close.  As I mentioned before, we do not see this issue with

    CCSv4.1, CCS3.3 or standard eclipse.

    Thanks,

    Krishna

  • Hi Krishna,

ok, glad to hear you were able to pinpoint the culprit.

It is certainly known that various virus programs can cause a bit of interference with CCS unfortunately.

    All the best.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa
