XDS510 USB emulator with CCS V6.1.3.00033

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM4378, TMS320F28069

I am using CCS V6.1.3.00033 with an XDS510 USB emulator in Windows 10 under parallels on a Mac.

The XDS510 is a best unstable and generally unusable. When i try and debug a project most of the time the emulator cannot be found. When i do manage to find it (after repeated trys) if it does run, it tends to wander around memory in a totally random way. You step into a function and on stepping through the emulator will jump to source code in a completely random function elsewhere in memory.

Has anyone else found similar issues and managed to find a fix?

Thanks

  • Hi Chris,
Your current configuration (running CCS on a Win10 VM on Mac) is not something that is officially supported. It seems hit or miss for the people that try. The XDS510 is a pretty old emulator that has been deprecated in support so it is not surprising that it is not working in that kind of environment.

What device are you using? We do have CCS 6.1.3 for Mac. But it only supports our microcontrollers and does not support XDS510.

    Thanks

  • Hi Ki,

    Thanks for your reply.

    I am using a TMS320F2069.

    What emulator would you recommend?

I have tried to install CCS 6.3.1 for the Mac, but i have a couple of issues which i am working through with help from another post. I would prefer to use the Mac if possible, but obviously i need an emulator which is compatible. CCS if fully licensed.

    Thanks for your help.

With a Spectrum Digital XDS510 USB Plus with CCS 6.1.3 and a Cortex-A9 (AM4378) under Windows 7 I haven't seen the symptoms of wandering around memory in a random way, but sometimes when starting a debug session got the following error message:

Pressing the Retry button allowed the debug session to continue.

As for a suggestion for an emulator, have you seen Supported Debug Probes which lists the debug probes supported by CCS 6 under MacOS.

The XDS510 and XDS560 class debug probes are not supported under MacOS, and it looks like the XDS200/XDS220 will give you the highest performance under MacOS.

[I don't use MacOS so can't confirm how well a XDS200/XDS220 will work with F28x/F28M]

    Do you really mean a TMS320F2069, or a TMS320F28069?

  • Thanks for your replay an help. Ill look at the XDS200/220.

    The processor should be TMS320F28069.

    Thanks

  • The XDS200 class emulator is comparable to the XDS510 in performance and would be good choice. The XDS100 is a solid entry level emulator if you are looking for a low cost option and not too concerned about download speeds
