TIDA-00657: Capacitor voltage rating on evaluation board

Part Number: TIDA-00657
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24780S,

Tool/software:

I am building a version of a smart charger based on the TIDA-00657 design using the BQ24780S.

The evaluation board is rated for up to 24Vdc however the 10uF caps that are essentially connected across the input rail (C2, C3, C4, C5) plus a few others (C1, C10) are rated 25V according to the BOM.  That seems a bit questionable, and I would think that a 35V rated part on a 24Vdc bus would be more appropriate.  Is the ACOVP circuit in the BQ24780S good enough that it is OK to use 25V capacitors?

  • Hello Jeff,

Yes, There should be no issue using the capacitors in the BOM, we have not had any reports of any issues with the chosen capacitors. However if this is still a concern, I see no issue with using caps that are rated at 35V.

    Best Regards,

    Christian.
