TIDA-00151: Self-Driving RC Car

Part Number: TIDA-00151
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430F5529LP, ENERGIA, PGA460, , PGA450-Q1

Hi,

I am looking to use this eval board in a self driving rc car application for Murata using our MA58MF14 transducer. We are currently planning on using an Arduino Mega as the brain of the car. If you guys have another solution you think would work better, I would be glad to hear it as well.

Also I would like some examples for receiving distance information from the eval board.

Thanks a ton.

  • Hi Jared,

Instead of using the Arduno Mega, you can purchase the PGA460Q1-EVM ( www.ti.com/.../boostxl-pga460 ) which includes an MSP-EXP430F5529LP. You can use the EVM hardware for initial evaluation of the PGA460 using our GUI, then re-purpose the hardware for your custom software development. The PGA460 Energia Library and Code Example package ( www.ti.com/.../slac741 ) will help you jump-start your software development in Energia using the EVM's MSP430 LaunchPad. The Energia code is compatible with the Arduino if you need to port from Arduino-to-Energia or vice-versa. The PGA460 Software Development Guide ( www.ti.com/.../slaa730 ) will help explain the flow and details of the Energia based code.

The TIDA-00151 reference design uses our older PGA450-Q1 device. The PGA460 is our latest ultrasonic sensing IC, with improvements in cost, size, performance, and functionality. For the PGA460 equivalent mono-static transformer driven reference design using the Murata MA58MF14-7N transducer, see the PGA460 Mono-static Transducer Transformer Driver Ultra-Small Design File at www.ti.com/.../slac757 .
If you want to use UART or SPI, download the PGA460 Mono-static Transducer Transformer Driver Small Form Factor Design File instead at www.ti.com/.../slac754 .

Check out our Ultrasonic FAQ page ( e2e.ti.com/.../3607.everything-you-need-to-know-for-ultrasonic-tof-air-coupled-collateral-tools-designs-faq ) on how to get started using the PGA460. We also offer a getting started video tutorial ( www.ti.com/.../slac754 ) for the PGA460 EVM, which is our recommend evaluation tool for first time users.
